The Lonely Funeral is a project in the city of Dundee, inspired by a similar project in the Netherlands. The aim is to mark the death of ‘lonely’ citizens – homeless, unknown, anonymous or simply unlamented – through the composition of poetry to be read at their funeral. Project will involve writers, funeral celebrants, funeral directors, local authorities, Police and NHS. It will help develop awareness of the impact of ‘lonely death’ on individuals and on society, bringing dignity and remembrance at the end of life. It will also help tell the stories of those who are unable to speak for themselves.
