Niall Sellar

After a stint in adult education, I qualified as a Modern Languages teacher in 2013, and have been working in secondary schools ever since. Alongside my teaching work, I have translated five detective novels from German into English. I live in Glasgow with my partner and two daughters.

I had been wrestling with the idea of writing a detective novel for years when the UK entered lockdown for the first time in March 2020. When I finally put pen to paper, however, I realised that I was in fact writing about my father, who died at the start of 2019. I began to weave my experience of bereavement into my work, and have now arrived at a largely unedited first draft. The protagonist is a grieving literary translator; the 'case' can only be solved when he faces up to his loss.
